Social housing review - Have your say

Published: Thursday 7 November 2019

We are proposing changes to the way we allocate social housing. Have your say. You can do this in three ways - by completing our online survey, by taking part in a focus group or by coming along to one of our drop-in sessions.

We have setup a page on the Council website which gives full details of the proposals and how you can take part.

Build your own home

Published: Friday 2 August 2019

What is self-build and custom build?

Self-build housing is where individuals or groups of individuals directly organize the design and construction of their own homes. This covers a wide range of projects including a traditional DIY self-build, to projects where self-builders employ someone to build their homes or a group of people build their own homes together.

Custom build housing is where you work with a developer as an individual or a group to help deliver your own home. The developer may help to find a plot, manage the construction and arrange the finance for your new home. This is more of a hands-off approach, but homes can be tailored to meet individual requirements with different levels of customization.

Community-led housing is where people and communities play a leading role in addressing their own housing needs. It has many overlaps with group self-build and custom-build, but also considers the long-term ownership or management, and where any benefits (such as affordability) are legally protected.

Self and Custom House building in Tower Hamlets

The Self-build and Custom House building Act 2015 places a duty on all local councils to maintain a register of individuals and associations who are interested in acquiring serviced plots of land for self and custom house building.

A great Homeseekers day was had by all!

Published: Tuesday 23 July 2019

The HomeSeekers Open Day took place on 19th June 2019 at Southern Grove in Bow, E3 between 3pm and 7pm.

We had 133 households in attendance (just under 200 adults in total) and the overwhelming majority were first time attendees.

It was a very successful event which covered housing options, welfare reform, shared ownership, mutual exchange and tenancy types.

We also had a fun children’s play area which included face painting and colouring tables which was well attended.

It was an example of great partnership working - the event was run by staff from 10 landlords from the Tower Hamlets Common Housing Register partnership.

The shopping voucher for £25, for completing the exit survey, was won by a Southern Housing Group tenant from E1.

Look out for our next Open Day planned for 27th Feb 2020 in Vallance Rd, E1 between 3pm and 7pm.
