Category A - Wheelchair Accessible
Designed to meet latest wheelchair accessible housing design standards offering extra space and wheelchair access to all rooms and facilities.
• No steps inside or out
• Communal access: level access with wide door, if above the
ground floor at least two wheelchair accessible lifts
• Front entrance: level access with wide door
• Internal access:
• may have stairs, if so will have lifting mechanism
• wide doorways
• wide corridors
• Kitchen: may be designed for a wheelchair user, but may be a
standard kitchen with space for a wheelchair to turn
• Bath/shower room and toilet with space for wheelchair to turn
• Wheelchair storage space and charging for electric wheelchair
• Homes with four or more bed space expect two toilets
• Likely to have a designated parking space
Category B - Partially Wheelchair Accessible
Designed to older wheelchair standards or significantly adapted to provide extra space and wheelchair access to at least the entrance level of the property
• No steps inside or out
• Communal access: shallow ramp or level access with wide door
• Front entrance: shallow ramp or level access with wide door
• Internal access:
• wide doorways
• wide corridors
• Kitchen: may be designed for a wheelchair user, but may be a
standard kitchen with space for a wheelchair to turn
• Bath/shower room and toilet with space for wheelchair to turn
• Wheelchair storage space and charging for electric wheelchair
• Four plus bed space homes expect two toilets
Category C - Lifetime Homes
Designed with 16 Lifetime Homes design standards including larger space standards that together create an accessible and adaptable home.
• No steps inside or out
• Communal access: level access with wide door
• Front entrance: level access with wide door
• If above the ground floor at least one wheelchair accessible lift
• Communal access: shallow ramp or level access with wide door
• Internal access:
• no steps
• wide doorways
• extra space in hallway if property has stairs they should meet the requirements for the installation a stair-lift
• Kitchen: standard work surfaces
• Larger bathroom
• Minimum of one toilet at the level of the front door
Category D - Easy Access
Built to the older access standards or the more recent Building Regulations that insist on a level approach to the entrance, wider doorways and more space for all general housing. Includes all new build homes that are on the ground floor or above the ground floor with at least one lift.

• Front entrance: shallow ramp or level access with wide door
• Internal access:
• no steps

• extra space in hallway
• If above the ground floor at least one communal lift

Category E - Step Free
General housing with no steps to the property, which happens to have limited potential for future adaptability of the bathroom and stairs.
• No steps inside or out, may have a shallow ramp
• If above the ground floor at least one communal lift
• If property has stairs, they should meet the requirements for the installation of the basic size stair-lift
• Kitchen: standard work surfaces
• Bathroom: standard size, but if small, should have the potential to be made bigger
Enlargement of the bathroom or installation of a stair-lift would
need to be confirmed by a Housing Occupational Therapist
Category F - General Housing
Does not meet requirements for other accessible housing register categories
Will have at least one of the following features:
• One or more steps to access the property
• If above ground floor has no communal lift
• Internal steps
• If property has stairs, a stair-lift is not possible as a future adaptation
• Steep ramp or slope
Category G - This property has not yet been assessed
